The Birman is a
delightful cat to have around. It is not as laid-back as the Persian, or is it
as vocal and demanding as the Siamese can be. If you’re looking for a
non-aggressive, people-loving and placid cat then the Birman is #1 for
consideration and the best choice.
With the Birman
you have the lovely look of the long haired cat, a coat through which you can
run your fingers and snuggle into on cold nights. The advantage with the
semi-long hair is that there is not the grooming required by the Persian coat.
Yes, there is some grooming required as all cats, short or long-haired, need
some level of attention.
Birmans are
extremely calm, docile cats who tend to, more often than not, relax in your arms
and the majority are very people loving and just adore to be around their people
or, in some cases, their person. They can, at times, exhibit dog-like behaviour
in that they will follow you around just as puppy dogs might do, also they might
playfully nip your heels to give you a hurry up. The toes can also be a target,
especially if they are sticking up at the end of the bed!
They are very
playful from kittenhood right through to old age and the kittens really love to
join in with whatever “action” is happening at the time, are very curious and
adore time with Mum or Dad just playing and doing kitten things. Two Birmans do
well together and in fact if you are away during the day, two are company for
each other.
The Red Factor
Birmans are different in nature & temperament to the ‘traditional’ colours.
They are more confident, out-going and can be more ‘up front’ in disposition and
nature. A new Red Factor kitten arriving in your home could have you, the
resident dog and the house (not just one room) sorted in the same day, meaning
that they are not easily intimidated. We have two red factors as resident house
cats, one is ‘Himself’ (Aureola Star Fyre), a cream point male neuter , and his
mother, Badarene Torti Tapestry, whose pictures you will find elsewhere. They
are both delightful to have although they can try your patience at times, like
when the paper is to be read, or you are sitting in their chair and will insist
in sitting on you until you move, this is when you might just hear all about it.
Sitting on the floor in front of you, looking you straight in the eye, and
letting you know that you are in the wrong. We wouldn’t be without them!
